Emergency Preparedness FAQ

Emergency Preparedness FAQ

Answers to the most common questions about building an emergency supply, water filtration, freeze-dried food, and disaster readiness.

Water Storage & Filtration

How much water should I store for an emergency?

Store a minimum of 1 gallon per person per day. For a 2-week supply — the recommended minimum for major emergencies — a family of four needs 56 gallons. Aqua Emergency canned water (50-year shelf life) is the most reliable long-term storage option.

What is the best water filter for emergencies?

The Berkey water filter is the gold standard for emergency water filtration. It requires no electricity or water pressure — gravity does the work. It removes bacteria, viruses, heavy metals, chlorine, and most chemical contaminants from any water source including rivers, streams, and melted snow. The Crown Berkey (6 gallons) suits families of 4–8; the Big Berkey (2.25 gallons) is ideal for 1–4 people.

How long does emergency water last in storage?

Aqua Emergency water in sealed steel cans has a certified 50-year shelf life. Standard bottled water in plastic is typically safe for 2 years. Water stored in food-grade containers at home should be rotated every 6–12 months. Store away from heat, sunlight, and chemicals.

Is tap water safe to drink during a power outage?

Tap water may become unsafe during extended power outages. Municipal water systems can lose pressure, which creates contamination risk. If you're on a well, the pump runs on electricity — it stops immediately when power fails. Always have stored water and a filtration backup like the Berkey.

Can you drink melted snow in a winter emergency?

Not without filtration. Melted snow can contain pollutants, road chemicals, and pathogens. Run it through a Berkey gravity filter before drinking.

Freeze-Dried Food & Emergency Food Storage

What is the best freeze-dried food brand?

Mountain House is widely considered the best freeze-dried food brand. It has supplied the US military since 1969, has a guaranteed 30-year shelf life on #10 cans, and consistently wins blind taste tests against competitors. Safecastle is an authorized Mountain House dealer.

How long does freeze-dried food last?

Mountain House freeze-dried food in sealed #10 cans has an officially guaranteed 30-year shelf life. Pouches last 7–10 years. Once opened, consume within a week. Store in cool, dry conditions below 70°F to maximize shelf life.

How do you cook freeze-dried food without electricity?

All Mountain House meals require only boiling water — just heat water on a camp stove, outdoor grill, or fire, pour into the pouch or can, stir, and wait 8 minutes. No pots, pans, or cleanup needed. This makes freeze-dried meals uniquely suited for power outages and grid-down scenarios.

How much emergency food should I store?

Start with a 72-hour minimum, build toward 30 days. Plan for 2,000 calories per person per day (2,500+ in cold weather or high activity). A Mountain House 15-case package provides a substantial multi-week supply for a family with variety.

What is a #10 can?

A #10 can is a large institutional-size metal can (roughly 1 gallon) used for long-term food storage. When nitrogen-flushed and hermetically sealed, it gives freeze-dried food a 30-year shelf life. Mountain House, Augason Farms, and others use this format for bulk emergency storage. One #10 can typically provides 10–25 servings depending on the meal.

What is the difference between freeze-dried and dehydrated food?

Freeze-dried food is flash-frozen and then placed in a vacuum chamber where ice is removed as vapor, preserving 97% of nutrients and structure. It has a 25–30 year shelf life and rehydrates in minutes. Dehydrated food uses heat to remove moisture, which degrades some nutrients and flavor. Shelf life is 5–15 years. For emergency preparedness, freeze-dried is significantly superior.

Emergency Kits & General Preparedness

What should be in a 72-hour emergency kit?

A complete 72-hour kit includes: water (1 gallon per person per day × 3 days), food (ready-to-eat or freeze-dried meals), a first aid kit, flashlight and batteries, emergency weather radio, copies of important documents, cash, a multi-tool, extra medications, and warm clothing. Pre-built 72-hour food supply kits cover the food and water component.

How long should my emergency food supply last?

FEMA recommends 72 hours minimum. Real emergencies routinely last longer — the 2021 Texas freeze lasted 4–14 days; major hurricanes can disrupt supply chains for weeks. We recommend a minimum 2-week supply and ideally 30 days for the most common regional disaster scenarios.

What is the Safecastle Royal membership?

The Safecastle Royal membership program gives members ongoing discounts on emergency preparedness products across the entire Safecastle catalog — including Berkey water filters, Mountain House freeze-dried food, and emergency kits. It pays for itself quickly on larger purchases.

Does Safecastle ship to Canada?

Yes, Safecastle ships to both the United States and Canada. Contact support@safecastle.com for questions about international shipping rates and availability.

Berkey Water Filters

Which Berkey is right for my family?

Choose based on household size: Travel Berkey (1.5 gal) for 1–2 people; Big Berkey (2.25 gal) for 1–4 people; Royal Berkey (3.25 gal) for 2–4 people; Crown Berkey (6 gal) for 4–8 people. All models use the same Black Berkey filter elements and provide the same filtration quality.

How often do Berkey filters need to be replaced?

Black Berkey filter elements last up to 3,000 gallons per element (6,000 gallons per pair). For a family of four using 3 gallons of filtered water per day, that's approximately 5–6 years per set. Clean the elements every 3 months to maintain flow rate and performance.

Do Berkey filters remove fluoride?

Standard Black Berkey elements do not remove fluoride. Add PF-2 Fluoride & Arsenic Reduction Elements as a secondary filter stage to remove fluoride. These sit below the Black Berkey elements and work in combination with them.

Can a Berkey filter work without electricity or running water?

Yes — that's its primary advantage. The Berkey uses gravity only. Pour any water into the upper chamber; it passes through the filter elements and collects in the lower chamber. No electricity, pump, plumbing, or pressure required. This makes it uniquely valuable for power outages and off-grid situations.
