A generator is only useful if it starts when you need it. And the most common reason generators fail during an emergency is stale, degraded fuel. Gasoline begins breaking down within 30–90 days of storage, leaving behind varnish and gum deposits that clog carburetors and fuel injectors. With a proper fuel stabilizer, you can extend that window to 2 years or more.
Why Gasoline Degrades
Modern gasoline contains ethanol (up to 10% in standard fuel) that attracts and absorbs water vapor. This water absorption causes phase separation — where ethanol and water settle to the bottom of your tank or container, leaving a layer of fuel-ethanol-water that won't combust cleanly. The result: a generator that cranks but won't run, or runs poorly and damages itself.
Beyond ethanol issues, gasoline oxidizes on contact with air. Oxygen reacts with the lighter hydrocarbon fractions, creating peroxides that further break down into varnish.
How Fuel Stabilizers Work
High-quality fuel stabilizers like PRI-G work through two mechanisms:
- Antioxidants: Scavenge free oxygen radicals before they can react with the fuel
- Fuel chemistry restoration: Unlike simple preservative stabilizers, PRI-G actually rejuvenates degraded fuel — bringing old gasoline back to near-fresh condition in many cases
PRI-G vs. Standard Stabilizers
Most hardware store stabilizers (like STA-BIL) simply slow degradation. PRI-G is a more advanced treatment that can extend fuel life up to 2+ years and, critically, can restore already-degraded fuel to usability. For serious emergency preparedness, PRI-G is the professional-grade choice.

Safe Fuel Storage Guidelines
- Use approved containers: HDPE fuel-rated containers only (red for gasoline, yellow for diesel)
- Storage location: Outside your living space, in a detached garage or shed, away from ignition sources
- Temperature: Avoid extreme heat — fuel in a hot vehicle expands and can leak
- Rotation: Even with stabilizer, rotate stored fuel every 12–24 months. Use it in your vehicles and replace with fresh treated fuel.
- Label: Write the storage date and treatment date on each container
How Much Fuel to Store
Calculate based on your generator's consumption rate (listed in the manual as gallons per hour at load) and your expected runtime:
Gallons = (hours per day) × (gal/hr at load) × (days of backup)
Example: 8 hr/day × 0.75 gal/hr × 7 days = 42 gallons for one week
Don't Forget Diesel
Diesel is actually more stable than gasoline but still degrades. For diesel generators or vehicles, PRI-D provides the same restoration and preservation benefits.
