What is a solar generator?
A true solar generator is a unit that produces electricity from the use of solar panels and solar panels only. Some solar generators do not contain a battery bank in which to store electricity and therefore, useless, since they produce no electricity during cloudy days and nights. The AEB OX Mini Power Plant can be charged from a 110 electrical outlet.
What is a battery bank?
A battery bank is the basis for all off-grid electric generation systems, and it can be as small as one battery or it can contain hundreds. It stores electricity that has been collected by either solar panels, wind turbines, gas generators, or by direct connection with a 110 electrical outlet. Once the battery bank is full (or even while it is charging) one can access the stored electricity for lights and other appliances.
Will the AEB OX Mini Power Plant run my whole house?
A battery bank system with enough solar panels to run your whole house will cost $20,000 to $30,000. The AEB OX will run nearly everything in your house, but for a limited time. (please check out our product page for the AEB OX Mini Power Plant). During an emergency such as a severe thunderstorm or ice storm, discretionary use should be considered. The more “stuff” you use, the quicker your battery bank will need recharging.
The great thing about the AEB OX Mini Power Plant is that if you have access to electricity within driving distance, you can recharge your system in a short time and don’t have to depend upon the sun.
Are solar panels the best way to recharge a system?
Even though the thought of using solar energy makes people feel warm and fuzzy, recharging a system with solar panels alone can be very timely--and sometimes impossible--due to bad weather. Many solar generators have small battery banks and come with one small wattage (90 watt) solar panel, providing very little electrical support.
The AEB OX Mini Power Plant stores 200 amp hours of electricity--two to four times more electricity than most solar generators. A 90 Watt solar panel would take and extremely long time to recharge our system. Recharging a small solar generator with a 90 watt solar panel is like filling up an inflatable kiddie swimming pool with a garden hose--it doesn’t take very long. Trying to recharge the AEB OX Mini Power Plant with a 90 watt solar panel would be like trying to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool with the same garden hose. It is for this reason we recommend two 135 watt solar panels for the AEB OX Mini Power Plant. (Solar panels are sold separately)
On the other hand using a standard 110 electrical outlet to recharge the AEB OX Mini Power Plant only takes a few hours and costs about .51 cents.
Is it noisy?
No; in fact all of our systems produce such little noise that most people have to check the on/off switch light to see if it is running.
Can your systems be used inside?
Definitely, unlike gas generators, they produce no deadly fumes, or noise and they do not need gasoline.
How long will the batteries last?
Depending upon how much they are used and maintained they can last up to 12 years.
If they are not being used, how often should they be recharged?
Batteries will lose a small amount of charge each month. It is recommended that they be recharged every couple of months to keep the optimal amount of power in case of an emergency.
Are the systems portable?
The AEB OX Mini Power Plant is as big as an over-sized suitcase and weighs 198 pounds. However, the large-wheeled trolley system allows it to be taken nearly anywhere.
Why do you use locking bolts on your systems?
There are two reasons we use locking bolts on our systems; First, it is a safety precaution designed to prevent general access to the case by small children. Our systems are not toys-- they contain a large amount of electricity, and touching the wrong wires inside can cause severe injury and possibly death.
The second reason is to prevent do-it–your-selfers from servicing the unit. Only licensed American Energy Backup technicians are allowed to service our systems.
What is the warranty?
All sales are final. Inverters carry a one-year manufacturer’s warranty with a six months warranty on batteries. All solar panels carry a 20-year warranty. Each unit contains a water detection device. When the device is activated due to submersion in water it voids the warranty. Any unauthorized opening of the units voids the warranty.
